Super Derby Day at Louisiana Downs

It’s been a long week for those of us who work at Louisiana Downs. It’s amazing the amount of effort, time and resources that go into putting on a big horse race (not even including the $750k). The radar right now is clear from here to western Texas (knock on wood) and we’ll be on the turf providing conditions remain safe.

Officially: I have opted-out of the Grits Eating Championship when I heard ‘Joey Chestnut’ was coming to compete. Apparently, he’s the Rachel Alexandra of eating. I don’t like grits, anyway.

Super Derby Selection

This year’s race is an extremely competitive and fascinating betting affair. Regal Ransom will very likely turn for home with the lead. The question (I believe) is whether or not Blame is good enough to run him down late. Godolphin is winning everything in site right now and the pace advantage is too strong to ignore. My pick for this year’s Super Derby is Regal Ransom.

As for my history in the race… I picked Strong Contender in 2006, he’s been my only winner in the three years I’ve called the race. Last year, Mambo Meister just couldn’t quite put it together.

Enjoy the day, and good luck!
