Prelude Day Memory
As I wait to hit the road for my two minute commute to Louisiana Downs, I cannot help but recall last year’s Super Derby Prelude. I consider the call in that race one of my luckiest ever. The story goes like this…
Star Production is a front running force. He has the lead turning for home, but judging by his jockey Carlos Gonzalez’s motions, its a tenuous lead at best. Golden Yank and Numismatist are closing. The stretch drive is them closing on him and whether or not he can hold on. They hit the wire and I say, “Star Production holds on!”
I thought clear as day he held on. No questions asked. The photo sign is posted which rarely means anything because they will post the sign when the margin is a neck or even a half-length. I watched the replay of the stretch drive on my monitor and realized the finish was anything but clear-cut. In fact, it was really tight. Too tight. An announcer at that point starts to pace, break out into cold sweats, curl-up into a ball in the corner of the booth reciting odd passages from great historical texts.
Luckily, Star Production did hold on. But it was way too tight. I should have never made the call. Ironically, during the call, however, I never second guessed the decision to announce him the winner. Perhaps it was adrenaline? I don’t know.
Anyway, today’s Super Derby Prelude anchors a four stakes bang-up card with beautiful weather, fast and firm conditions, and lots of great wagering opportunity. I hope to see you out at the track as we officially begin the countdown to the Super Derby.

Interesting story Travis, Im sure every racecaller has been in this situation and have also had one turn out the wrong way. Just dont ever become one of those guys that says too close to call when its a neck or greater. Thats irratating.
I know its still a month or so away but can we expect a full card analysis from you on Derby day on this site? That would be nice.
I guess it depends on what happens in Travers but is Summer Bird expected for the race?
